#49 SUSTAINABLY STEPPING UP FOR OUR CHILDREN WITH JAMES ALLSTON
"What terrifies me the most is that we are running out of time. We have, like, maybe five years at the most to make changes. We cannot just think about our individual actions anymore, but rather how we can influence at least ten others at the same time. We need to do this for our children."
Other than being my brother and a general inspiration to me, James Allston is the Managing Director of New Energy Ventures and helps businesses to commercialise energy opportunities using new, sustainable technologies. An energy and business strategy expert, when we catch up for a coffee in our favourite Fuller’s Bookshop Café, I often have trouble keeping up with his intelligence, enthusiasm and momentum. So, I decided to take the opportunity to bring my big brother onto the podcast and with more time and less distractions, to pick James’ brains on everything energy-related. My underlying endeavour was to understand how we can embrace new technology to lesson our carbon footprints, do our bit for climate change and ultimately to feed off his wisdom to continue to empower me to keep leaning in and stepping up in the face of this huge challenge upon us.
James hasn’t had a straight forward trajectory. He has certainly experienced the ups and downs of life as an individual, but also in business. Whilst we didn’t delve into all this on this podcast, seeing his business and him now thriving makes my heart sing with happiness. He truly is an inspiration to me and those who are fortunate enough to call him friend, colleague, peer or family.
Today, James uses his extensive experiences to support businesses to create new revenue streams by tapping into new technologies and business strategies that can improve their bottom-line financial performance and enhance environmental sustainability. He has worked within energy distribution, energy retail, property development, embedded networks, new energy start-ups and technology companies. His expertise extends to business development, product development, energy regulation strategy and new energy technology, including in solar, batteries, embedded networks, microgrids, energy efficiency, energy management and data analytics, demand aggregation, virtual power plants and peer-to-peer energy. Wow! What does all that mean? Simply stated, it means he wants to leave the planet a better place… most notably for his children. And so do I. |
So, on this podcast our two brains come together as we discuss our greatest fears, our greatest wishes, and how we believe we need to step up to do our bit for the planet, our communities and our children.
We both believe that the window to do so is fast closing and it requires all of us to rustle our circles of influence – to throw not just a pebble but larger rocks into the pond and aim to create a greater ripple effect. Team, it is time!
